Well, sort of book/movie notes & book & apron giveaway. Is anyone else looking forward to seeing Julie & Julia???
Oh I cannot wait! I have two friends who want to go so I will see it at least twice and then I know I will have to see it with Husband! It is about the LATE GREAT Julia Child and an author named Julie Powell and the intertwining of their lives. I read the book a couple of years ago simply because it was food related novel and I love those! Now I am listening to the book on my ipod on my morning walk. My favorite still from the upcoming movie:
Anyone who takes food photos or provides food for food photos, or watches pictures being taken of food can’t help but appreciate this scene. Stanley Tucci plays Mr. Child in the movie. YAY!
Julia Child had a long love affair with food. Good food. And I respect that. And I expect to see a lot of aprons in this flick as well. Gotta love a woman in an apron, right?
Oh I almost forgot! In celebration of the opening of this movie I am giving away a copy of Julie Powell’s book Julie and Julia ~ my year of cooking dangerously. Oh…and yeah, an apron too. Duh! You didn’t think I could actually have a giveaway and NOT include and apron did you? Fun huh? How do you enter to win? Well, leave me a comment telling me why you need a copy, a favorite Julia Child quip or quote if you have one and then consider yourself entered! I will draw a name on Monday, August 9th. Foregoing any unforeseen problems, I will have seen the movie by then. At least once. Man, I so don’t want to be disappointed! You can see the trailer here. Just the scenes of the streets of New York and Paris are worth the price of the movie!
By the way, in amongst all my other projects, I am designing MY PERFECT APRON. No, it will not be frilly, or cute (well maybe cute) but it will be what I consider PERFECTION in an apron. Full coverage, straps that stay put, big enough to cover the sides of me so when I wipe my hands down the side of my hips (I can’t break myself of this habit), I won’t be wiping them on my clothes. Pockets, oh yeah pockets! And at least one loop for a dish towel. Heavy enough so that when I step up to the sink and splatter myself with water or stand next to the stovetop tasting something and dribble it down my front, it will catch the spill and not let it soak thru to my clothes. There may be an apron similar to what I want out there, but I have yet to find it so…I will make it! I have found ones that might do, if the dang straps would adjust without me pinning or sewing them shorter or folding the bib part where it will tie in the right place. Not everyone is 5’6″ you know? Therefore our torsos are a bit shorter.
So there you have it. Happy Saturday EVERYONE! And in the words of one of my heros….
BON APPETIT!
That’s a lot of onions! And one pretty cute apron!!
Eat something good today!
no comments yet? I’m surprised. Well, why do I need the book, because I’ve never read it and would love to. An apron, definitely need one because I’m a messy cook.
Favorite saying? Bonn A petite! not sure of the spelling but close enough for me.
Hey there, I look forward to seeing your “perfect” apron. :0) I know you sew really good looking ones!
That movie should be very good..
Drop by to visit me for the “Where Bloggers Create” party!
Hugs,
Stephanie
I think Meryl Streep will be brilliant in this movie…well, she is so good in everything, isn’t she? I think I should read this book, so that I will enjoy the movie that much more ;o)
Blessings,
Niki
why? cause I’ve never read it and it actually looks very interesting, and we have recently taken a little look into French cuisine here at our house, and it would be neat to read a bit about Julia’s work.
Can’t wait to see the apron you create.
I would love a chance to win this great treat. The book and movie are both on my list of things I want.
Can’t wait.
Ruth
Oh yes, I am really looking forward to this movie, from the minute I first saw the trailer on TV!!!!! Did not know if it or the book before then.
I wonder how they got Meryl Streep to look so very tall….? Julia was about 6 feet tall I think….a little bit of trivia I remember, being so tall myself. I had to smile at your last comment about apron sizes….I wonder if Julia had hers specially made too….with longer than average straps and skirts?
I need this book because I haven’t read a good book this summer. I love to read and read several good books during the fall and winter, but summer has been soooo busy! I need a vacation and probably won’t get one this year and a good book is the next best thing.
Your practical apron sounds wonderful. I am 5′ 6″ and I still have to pin up the straps on most aprons.
I’m most at home in the kitchen – and often most entertained by bloggers – isn’t that two essentials … or do I need the book? HINT.
Delightful Julia Child quote: Find something you’re passionate about and keep tremendously interested in it.
Keep up the cooking – in your kitchen and on your blog!
-Andi
I am looking forward to seeing your apron and the movie. It looks good. I am a huge Meryl fan.
I gave up on aprons long ago. I am not quite 5 feet so I understand the whole short torso thing. I never found a comfortable one.
*cheers*
I need the book because I live in France-Don’t you think that’s reason enough? All kidding aside…I need the book because I won’t be able to see the movie for a very long time and it would then become one of my books on my beam that are listed on my blog. It might be nice to have an apron that I could wear over my overalls, because all my aprons are vintage from my family so they are hanging in the kitchen…I just wipe my hands on my overalls! At the risk of sounding redundant…my favorite quote is of course-“Bon Appétit!”-Laury
I absolutely can’t wait to see this movie! I think both Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci will be perfect in their roles. The pictures you posted are wonderul. Makes me smile just thinking about seeing the movie. I know I am going to buy the DVD as soon as it comes out.
I NEED this book. I can’t find it on the shelves of our local stores. I am half way through My Life in France as I type this~love her story. I remember as a teen coming home from school and watching her cooking show with my mom, we loved her then, too.
I really like many of her quotes (she was so colorful). If I have to choose one today, I think it would be this… “The only time to eat diet food is while you’re waiting for the steak to cook”. Juila, we miss you.
Looking forward to seeing your perfect apron.
Bon Appetit!
mary
Another fabulous giveaway from you! I really hope I win this one. Here’s why I need to:
a) I love to read food-related books.
b) I have not yet read this one.
c) This movie looks fantastic!
d) I always try to read the book before I see the movie, so I need to get my hands on that book. 🙂
e) And last, but certainly not least, I have been dying to have one of your aprons for my very own!
Thank you for this opportunity.
I know who Julia Child was and what she did but I don’t really “know” her. What motivated her to become the brilliant chef? Was she just a natural talent? I’d love to learn more.
As for your “perfect” apron. I can’t wait to see what you come up with!
Thanks for sharing!
I remember watching Julia Child on TV when I was 8 or 9 years old. My brother and I would laugh at her funny voice and how messy she always was. But I can’t think of a more delightful, endearing personality. My quotation is not from Julia herself, but rather, from a sonnet, written by her husband for her 49th birthday:
Birthday 1961
O Julia, Julia, cook and nifty wench,
Whose unsurpassed quenelles and hot souffles,
Whose English, Norse and German, and whose French,
Are all beyond my piteous powers to praise —
Whose sweetly rounded bottom and whose legs,
Whose gracious face, whose nature temperate,
Are only equalled by her scrambled eggs:
Accept from me, your ever-loving mate,
This acclamation shaped in fourteen lines
Whose inner truth belies its outer sight;
For never were there foods, nor were there wines
Whose flavor equals yours for sheer delight.
O luscious dish! O gustatory pleasure!
You satisfy my taste buds beyond measure. PAUL CHILD
I’m looking forward to the movie, too! My stepmom and sis were thinking it’d make a great girls’ day out event, so we’re hoping we can arrange a time that weekend when we can all go together. I listened to the book on tape a few months ago and really enjoyed it.
Can’t wait to see your perfect apron! Today I’m working on converting my pale green overalls into an apron since they don’t fit me very well anymore … it might not be “perfect”, but at least I will still be able to “wear” my favorite overalls LOL!
Hi Susan,
I’d love to read the book and am looking forward to seeing the movie. I always enjoyed her cooking shows.
And she was so good at what she loved to do! Don’t have a favorite quote. I am looking forward to seeing your ‘favorite’ apron. I too have trouble with straps as I always tend to have to pin them up or keep pulling them onto my shoulders because they fall down.
I am soooo looking forward to the movie! I did not realize that there is a book too! I’ll have to check that out also. I can’t wait to see your perfect apron. I am an apron lover!
I need this because I never have enough recipes. Yep.
Oh do I need that apron – hint to all – I am a messy kitchen person!!
I don’t know much about Julia Child besides seeing her cooking show a bit, but I’m really excited to see the movie and learn more. Hey, I ought to read the book, too!
Oh I haven’t seen a movie or read a good book forever it has been years…and yes I too would love to have an apron…I remember watching
Julia Child everything looked so good….
Please enter me in your giveaway…thanks and have a great evening…
Sweet Blessings…
Tonja
I would love to read this book..and sure look forward to the movie. I remember watching Julia Child and having her cookbook years ago..I wonder who has it now? Awesome!
…because I got BAKING WITH JULIA as a gift for my 10th birthday, and baked almost everything in it by the time I was 13. Ok, not nearly as impressive as what Julie did! But the book sounds great.
I cannot wait for this movie!! I am currently reading Ms. Child’s memoirs “My Life in France.” Some day I’m gonna win & wear one of your lovely aprons!!!
Thanks so mcuh!
Laura
Oh, I think I’m Julia in disguise! I love watching her shows and can’t wait to see the movie. Pick me!
I would love to read the book, and I love aprons!!!
I have always adored Julia Child. I started watching her on PBS when nobody had even heard of her. I think it was 1966, and she was on Channel 28 with the first of her shows as The French Chef. I tried to recreate a few of her culinary delights, always with disastrous results. I was in the fourth grade and didn’t have a lot of cooking experience, but I was creative. I couldn’t wait to tune in every week and see what she was up to. I have loved watching cooking shows ever since. 🙂
I can’t wait to see this movie! My mom and my sister and I are going to have a “girls’ day” and go to see it together.
Well, I believe I need the book because I am in a slump and a good book would help. A good book about FOOD would DEFINITELY help. An apron would certainly perk me up, too. What fun!
I haven’t read the book yet but would love too and I’m still trying to win one of your aprons! And I can’t wait to see this movie either! Favorite quote would have to be:
Life itself is the proper binge!
I’m really looking forward to seeing this movie. We never see anything before it’s made it to the library. lol Hmmm, all I can think of with Julia may not even have really been said by her…but I love the idea of her taking a drink from the wine bottle and saying ” a little for this and a little for me.” But, alas, that was probably just a SNL skit.
I am still swooning from receiving the beautiful vintage apron you sent so don’t worry about entering me into this giveaway. It turns out I am just too lucky!!! 🙂
Susan! What a great giveaway. I purchased the book in hopes I could get it read in time for the movie and would you believe that John is reading it? This is a definite marriage no-no, but he is actually reading it! Missing you terribly…Kelly
I would love to have the book because I collect cookbooks and love books about cooks, etc. I remember Julia Child and The Galloping Gourmet on TV when I was a young bride. I do not go to movies, but a friend and I are GOING to this one. I have written my own cookbook and am in the process of writing #2 and #3. I would also love an apron that is different and functional. I have one a friend gave me that has a potholder attached. Interested??? I could send a picture, if I can find the apron in my sewing room, Ha!!. Hope I win.
Is it too late to enter? I’d LOVE to win!!!
I can’t wait for the movie, either!! I hope they do a good job of portraying her life. And just THINK of all the people that will be inspired by her, once again, to COOK!!! LOVE IT!!
His,
Mrs. U
HI!!
can’t wait to see this movie! why i think i deserve to read the book and recevie an apron. i recall watching julia as a child pretend i could cook like her. evento this day wheni’m in my kitchen whipping up something tha is sure to burn, boil over or taste like utter garbage. i think of her shows an how simple she made it look!
thanks!!!
I need a copy of the book because it’s going to take forever to get it from the library, my favorite book store. And honestly, my favorite Julia quote is a recipe I make over and over. I love aprons! I made them and was wearing them long before the current rage and don’t really know how to cook without one. And truly, why would I want to?!
Oh, I would LOVE to read this book because I know the movie will not be coming anywhere near the tiny, rural town I call home. I will have to wait until it’s out on video….. I adore Julia Child, and have since I was a kid watching her on Saturday morning. Tried cooking many, many things from her books. I love the idea (saw one of the movie trailers) of cooking my way through her cook books! And an apron, too? Who can HAVE too many aprons??????
Thanks for offering this giveaway, and please be sure to tell us all about the movie! Vicariously may not be the best way to live, but sometimes it’s the only way we rural chicks get our fix!
I NEED the book because I honestly had never heard of it before I started seeing previews for the movie. How I could have missed it, I don’t know, but I definitely need to read it!
I have to see this movie! Did you see the apron Meryl Streep is wearing? Oh, my gosh! Fabulous. 🙂
I so want to read the book before I see the movie and if I win a copy, I’ll be able to!
I have made Julia Child’s stuffed mushroom recipe for years and years. Delicious!!!
Thanks for such a fun giveaway!
This is one of the best giveaways I’ve seen. Whoever wins have treasure.
Ok, I really would love to read the book and I absolutely love aprons!I remember watching Julia when I was little and I always loved her voice! So enter me in your drawing and pick me too!
So fun
thanks
for hosting
Pam from Cocomama
This is the first I’ve heard of this movie! Sounds like fun and who doesn’t like Meryl?! I remember watching Julia Child when i was a little girl. I totally love her unique voice. Funny; once you hear it,… you never forget it!
I’ve gotta read that book. Definitely, definitely before seeing the film.
BTW
My name’s Lea and I too am an apronoholic. I tie one on every day. 😉 – …. hafta say: Words out that your aprons rock!
I desperately NEED this book. I love Julia Child and Meryl Streep. I miss Julia Child.
Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci in the movie world together – it doesn’t get much better than that!!!!! One of my favorite things about Julia Child is that she was such a happy person – loved life!
I have so many favorite aprons, but my all time number one is my grandma’s apron. It’s made from white flour bags, with red (very faded now) rick rack trim – her everyday apron. She was an awesome cook and baker of note in her community. Wish I had had more time with her.
MimiG
Excellent post! I am with you all the way…can’t wait to see the movie. Loved the book, and although I am older that Julie Powell, I really related. I lived where she lives and worked where she worked (same areas) but 20 years prior. I hope that you will post your opinion after you see the movie.
♥, Susan
How can I NOT be in love with with a woman, who, when asked her favorite wine, replied, “Gin”. Ah, Julia we miss you! Can’t wait for the movie- it’ll be a mother/daughter girly day. Thanks for your awesome blog!
I don’t really need a copy!
I’m really here for the apron!
😀

“Life itself is the proper binge” Julia Child
Well, that is a mouthful! I always loved her sparkle and obvious love of life and the fact that she never stopped being interested in people and the things she could learn. One of her last cooking shows was with younger “today’s” chefs and without belittling anyone, she frequently asked questions or offered an alternative way to something that the other chef had not considered. She was a fun and funny woman and I have enjoyed everything I have ever cooked from her recipes.
Although I am familiar with the Julie story I have not read the book so that too would be lovely to compare with the movie.
Thanks for the opportunity to enter your giveaway Susan!

🙂
I cannot wait for the movie and I must must must read the book first. I read Harry Potter in 1 day before it came out last month. And a Suzi apron- everyone must own at least one!
I can’t wait to see this film Susan. I got the book the other day and am looking forward to reading it. I want to read the book before I see the film! Perhaps I’ll wear my apron whilst I am reading it…sounds like a good idea!
I need this book to offer to my girlfriend so that she shows the smile that warms my heart everytime I see it!

I can so relate to Julia Childs…being a late bloomer to my career but never giving up on myself. I have in recent years started sewing and love it. I would love to win your perfect apron! I’m also looking forward to seeing this movie next week

I’d love to win a copy of this book because I love anything related to cooking! And being a blogger as well so I’d love to read it. Thanks for a great giveaway!
God bless,
Amanda
I would love to have this book. I haven’t read it yet and I almost picked it up in the store the other day. And really, who couldn’t use another apron!
I love Julia! What I love most is her encouragement to just get out there and try it. In our family we say that it is not rocket science, what is the worst that could happen?
Wow a cooking book. My daughter loves to cook and is getting married soon (I will lose my cook around here). I know she would love a copy of it. (I would too but I am willing to give it to her) But I think I will keep the apron.
I need this book for the pleasure of reading it.
What else do you need books for?
Ohh I hope I’m not late. I love Julia! I used to love to listen to her talk with the accent and love the food she would cook. I was in grade school too. I so want to see the movie, she is the original Queen of Cooking shows. And did you say an apron too! Double bonus:)
My favorite Julia Child quote: If you’re afraid of butter, just use cream!”
I loved watching Julia’s show and would love to win this book, I just finished all the Sookie Stackhouse novels and I need something new to read! Thanks for the giveaway.
Wow, what a great giveaway! I can’t wait to see this movie. Maybe my apron sisters will come with me and we can all wear our aprons! I would wear the one you giveaway for sure if I win it! I hope I win…I would love to read that book in my new apron.
I would love this book and the apron is way cool.
I would love to win because I can surprize my BF and read the book before we go see it at the movies. She always does that and she is reading The Time travel on right now. So this way I can be reading this one. I think its going to be a fun and exciting mocie. My BF has taught me the book is always better.
Thanks for the chance to win Kath’ at http://www.lilbitoldlilbitnew.com
I am so looking forward to this movie! I never thought about who would play her, but they nailed it with Meryl Streep. I have not read the book yet, so I would love a copy, and I always wear an apron in the kitchen. I’m 5’4″ so I get what you’re saying about finding the perfect apron. Thanks for the chance!
I am seeing this movie with my daughter this weekend. We are both very excited.
Cooking has taught me so much about life, and life has taught me how to cook. I would love to read this story because from what I hear, the story of it is along the same lines! Thanks!
I am not a good cook at all and I think this book would help. Also, not being a good cook means I’m darn messy!!
I am so looking forward to seeing this movie, and I would love to read the book – while wearing an apron of course!
I would love to read this book. And I love to cook!
Thanks!
Oh, I love both actresses!
I didn’t even know that there was a book associated with this movie!
I need to get to know it!
So, thanks a lot!
🙂
I can’t wait to see it either!!!
Suzanne
Oh, so nice!

I need this because I really need to learn how to cook in a delightful way!
Thank you for entering me 🙂
I would love to read this book and an apron would be wonderful too! I can’t wait to see the movie 🙂 Thanks again and have a wonderful day 🙂
Sharon
I have plans to see the movie next weekend. I can’t wait.
Why should I win? I love to bake, but when it comes to cooking, I am CLUELESS! And if I had this awesome book and a cute new apron, maybe my boyfriend and I will stop eating take-out all the time. 🙂
I can’t wait to see this movie! And as a book junkie, this would just make my day! : )
